Mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of amine‐ and non‐functionalized reduced graphene oxide/epoxy carbon fiber‐reinforced polymers

Abstract Graphene and its related materials are increasingly applied in fiber‐reinforced polymers to tailor their material properties for high performance composites. Yet, the use of graphene derivatives that underwent a plasma functionalization process is not well understood. This study uses 1.50 wt.% unfunctionalized (rGO) or plasma‐treated reduced oxide with amine‐functionalities (frGO) an epoxy matrix prepare unidirectional pre‐impregnated carbon fibers. The characteristics graphene‐modified (g‐CFRP) compared neat polymer (CFRP). Both g‐CFRP configurations exhibit higher void content than CFRP. No significant difference between CFRP g‐CFRPs observed respect Young's modulus, glass transition temperature, storage specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity at room in‐plane electrical conductivity. reduction ultimate tensile strength up −13% noted. In addition, apparent interlaminar shear transverse increased by +12% rGO‐CFRP +52% frGO‐CFRP. knowledge will support selection additives for, example, lightning strike protection aircrafts, sensory materials, electromagnetic interference shielding transfer elements.
